The Heart Behind Primitive Gatherings

Sometimes life's biggest passions begin in the most unexpected places.

For Lisa Bongean, owner and founder of Primitive Gatherings, it all started one Saturday morning while waiting at swimming lessons. Sitting nearby was a woman quietly hand quilting a patchwork baby quilt. Curious about how simple pieces of fabric could come together to create something so beautiful, Lisa struck up a conversation.

The woman mentioned a local quilt shop. Lisa wasted no time. "As soon as I could," she recalls, "I visited the shop and signed up for the next quilting class."
She had used a sewing machine before, mostly to make handmade Halloween costumes for her 3 boys, but quilting was something entirely different. Her first quilt, a blue-and-white star pattern, came with all the uncertainty every new quilter knows.

"I just remember trying to figure everything out and feeling unsure.

That uncertainty didn't last long. Almost immediately, quilting became more than a hobby.

"I was completely obsessed," Lisa says. "I fell in love with the creativity of it all."

Following a Dream

Looking back, Lisa admits she never imagined how her love of quilting would eventually become Primitive Gatherings.

"No," she says with a laugh. "This is more than any one person could ask for."

The name Primitive Gatherings was chosen intentionally. Rather than limiting herself to quilts alone, Lisa wanted a name that could grow alongside her interests.
"I loved antiques and collecting," she explains. "I wanted a name that would let me grow my business into pretty much anything that I loved."

Years later, after the passing of her father, Lisa made a life-changing decision. While working part-time in a quilt shop and already designing quilts, books, and patterns, she realized life was simply too short not to spend every day doing what she loved.

This decision became Primitive Gatherings.

More Than a Quilt Shop

Ask Lisa what she's most proud of today, and it isn't the countless patterns she's designed or the popularity of her fabric collections.

It's the people.

"What makes me most proud are the connections I've made with quilters, and the connections they've made with each other."

That sense of community isn't accidental. Growing up without sisters, Lisa understands how meaningful friendships can become later in life.

"I believe there's a lot of loneliness after children leave the nest," she says. "Our quilting community gives people a place to connect with like-minded souls."
That philosophy extends beyond the quilt shop itself and into The Gathering, Primitive Gatherings' retreat center.

Lisa envisioned a beautiful place where quilters could escape everyday life, surround themselves with creativity, and spend uninterrupted time making quilts.
The most rewarding moments aren't necessarily the finished quilts.

"It's seeing the smiles when friends meet again," Lisa says. "They share their lives together and come back year after year."

Inspiration Is Everywhere

Lisa's designs have become instantly recognizable, blending antique-inspired fabrics with timeless color palettes and classic styling. Her inspiration comes from everyday life.

"I love my flower gardens," she says. "I love life. If you pay close attention, life leads you in many directions."

Those moments eventually become fabric collections, which she says often tell the story of her own life and the things she loves most.

Although Primitive Gatherings became known for rich primitive colors, Lisa says her style has evolved over the years.

"My palette has lightened up quite a bit," she says. "I'm embracing white now. Fifteen years ago I never would have used white."

When beginning a new collection, everything starts with color. First comes the palette. Then the fabrics. Finally, the quilts themselves.
Currently, she's designing a new fabric collection called Urban Flower Garden, along with approximately ten coordinating quilt designs that will inspire quilters of every skill level.

Teaching with Confidence

Whether through books, classes, retreats, or patterns, Lisa has taught thousands of quilters over the years. Her favorite part? Helping people realize quilting doesn't have to be difficult.

"I love teaching people how to be more efficient with their time and skills.."

She also laughs about one fear she wishes every quilter would overcome. "Triangles."

"I find it funny that people are afraid of them," she says. "There's really nothing hard about making a quilt with thousands of pieces. It's usually just repetition and perseverance."

Her advice for beginners is simple. Choose a pattern that offers success early.
"I want first quilts to leave a big impression. There are so many beautiful patterns that are both simple and stunning."

Creating with Purpose

Even after all these years, Lisa's enthusiasm hasn't faded.

"I still love every minute of what I do."

This excitement extends beyond designing quilts.

Primitive Gatherings has always believed quilting is about more than creating beautiful projects, it's also about giving back.

One cause especially close to Lisa's heart is Missions of Honor, an organization supporting veterans through its Freedom to Liberty: A Mission of Healing Retreat.

The three-night retreat is designed to help veterans of the Global War on Terrorism navigate the mental health challenges that can follow military service. During their time in New York, participants visit meaningful landmarks including the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Statue of Liberty, and One World Trade Center, while connecting with fellow veterans in an atmosphere of healing and encouragement.

Primitive Gatherings has proudly supported the organization through fundraising events, including its annual Primitive Christmas celebration, which is the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, where customer purchases and special event tickets help raise money for the retreat. It's another example of how Lisa and her team continue to use the quilting community to make a difference beyond the sewing room.

"There's always something exciting going on at Primitive Gatherings," Lisa says. "I'm especially excited about our Missions of Honor charity."

When asked what she hopes people will feel years from now when they're wrapped up in one of her quilts, Lisa's answer beautifully captures why quilting continues to matter.

"I believe quilts are love you can touch."

After choosing a pattern, selecting fabrics, and investing hours of careful stitching, every finished quilt becomes much more than fabric and thread. It's a gift of time, a gift of creativity, and ultimately, a gift of love.

Whether you're discovering Primitive Gatherings for the very first time or have followed Lisa's work for years, a visit to the shop is an experience every quilter should add to their bucket list.
