For many quilters, sewing is about more than fabric and thread. It is a way to create something beautiful, share a gift, and use a creative passion to bless others.

For thousands of quilters around the world, this opportunity comes through a simple crossbody purse. But in Zambia, that purse represents something much bigger, it is part of a mission that creates opportunity, supports education, and reminds girls they are loved and believed in.

This is the story of Sew Powerful, a Christian ministry founded by Jason and Cinnamon Miles that is helping transform communities in Zambia through purposeful products, local employment, and educational support.

"We want to see Zambians be the beneficiaries of the growth and success of the ministry," Jason explained. "Our heart has always been local employment for local impact."

A Ministry Built on Opportunity

The story of Sew Powerful began in 2009 in Ngombe Compound (pronounced Nom-Bay), one of Lusaka, Zambia's most challenging urban neighborhoods.

Eight mothers whose children attended a local community school came together with a dream: they wanted a better future for their children.

At the time, the school had no building of its own. Classes met in a partially constructed church with dirt floors, no chalk, and students gathered wherever there was room.

Jason and Cinnamon began working alongside these women, helping them create handmade items that could support their community. For the first six years, the team focused on making school uniforms. Families could purchase uniforms through affordable micro-installments, allowing even the poorest households to send their children to school.

The program did more than provide uniforms, it created meaningful employment.

Those early years were about building trust, relationships, and a strong foundation. Jason compares this season to the story of giant bamboo, which spends years developing roots before suddenly growing rapidly.

Today, Sew Powerful employs more than 150 people in Zambia and is supported by nearly 2,000 volunteers around the world. The ministry provides school support, hot lunches for 11,500 children each day, and programs designed to help students thrive.

The Purse That Opened Doors

The Sew Powerful Purse Program began after the team discovered a major barrier facing girls in Zambia.

Many girls were missing school during their monthly periods because they lacked access to proper menstrual health supplies.

The Sew Powerful team began researching solutions and realized they had an opportunity to combine two important goals: helping girls stay in school while creating jobs within their own community. The purse became the delivery tool.

Sew Powerful created a crossbody purse pattern and invited volunteers around the world to make purses and send them in. A $10 contribution per purse was requested to help support the cost of running the program, although it was not required.

The response was immediate. The first year, Sew Powerful received 503 purses. The next year, more than 1,600 arrived. The program continued to grow, eventually reaching thousands of volunteers and tens of thousands of purses.

Today, each purse distributed in Zambia includes four reusable sanitary pads, handmade soap, two pairs of underwear, and a handwritten note from the person who created it.

The purses are prepared by the Sew Powerful team and distributed during school health classes. Each girl receives two purses, one for herself and one to share with another female family member who may also need support.

Since 2015, more than 185,000 girls have been helped through the program.

More Than Supplies. A Message of Love!

The impact of the Sew Powerful Purse Program reaches far beyond the items inside the bag.

The program helps girls remain in school and gives them the confidence to continue pursuing their education.

When Sew Powerful began the program, they asked school administrators whether girls were struggling academically because they were missing school during their periods. At one partner school, they discovered girls were falling behind boys on an important seventh-grade exam.

After several years of the program, that gap disappeared. While Jason recognizes many factors contribute to academic success, he believes providing girls with the support they need is an important step toward helping them reach their potential.

But perhaps one of the most meaningful parts of the purse is something that costs nothing at all. The handwritten note.

Each volunteer is encouraged to write a message to the girl who will receive the purse.

"Pray for her. Write her a heartfelt note. Make it a masterpiece," Jason shared.

For many girls, the purse becomes one of the nicest gifts they have ever received. It is not just a practical item; it is a reminder that someone believes they are important and that they have a future full of possibilities.

Creating Jobs Through Sewing

The Sew Powerful Purse Program also creates meaningful employment in Zambia.

Approximately 50 team members work directly with the purse program through sewing teams, soap production, and health education. Beyond that, Sew Powerful employs cooks, gardeners, logistics workers, children's ministry leaders, and many others.

Sew Powerful does not simply train people and send them elsewhere to find work. They hire local team members, invest in them, and work alongside them as they serve their own communities.

The bigger the program grows, the more opportunities are created.

The Quilters Who Make It Possible

The Sew Powerful Purse Program would not exist without the thousands of volunteers who give their time, creativity, and sewing skills.

Around 2,000 volunteers participate each year, creating purses that become part of a much larger mission.

Jason encourages anyone making their first purse to slow down and enjoy the process. Think about the girl who will receive it. Pray for her. Write her a note. Create something made with love.

Because in the end, the purse is not just about what is inside.

It is about the person who made it and the girl who receives it knowing that someone cares.
